About Me

Nancy Sun, M.M., NCTM, is a dedicated music educator and private piano teacher with a passion for helping students of all ages and learning styles develop their musical skills, creativity, and confidence. Since 2015, she has taught piano, voice, and music theory at her private studio in Los Gatos, California, where she works with students ranging from elementary school children to adults.

Nancy's teaching philosophy is rooted in meeting each student where they are and creating an engaging, supportive learning environment. Her primary research interest is Universal Design for Learning (UDL), an educational framework that promotes inclusive instruction and minimizes barriers for students with diverse abilities and learning styles.

Nancy earned the prestigious Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM) designation from the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). This nationally recognized certification reflects professional excellence, adherence to rigorous teaching standards, and a commitment to lifelong growth in music education.

Her students regularly participate in the Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC) Certificate of Merit® evaluation program and consistently achieve outstanding results, including State Honors and Senior Medallion Awards. Many students also perform in studio recitals and develop strong foundations in technique, musicianship, sight-reading, theory, and artistic expression.

In addition to her private teaching, Nancy serves as Associate Faculty in the Music Department at West Valley College, where she teaches beginning and intermediate piano courses. She also served as a faculty member and project advisor for San Jose State University's Three Summers Master's Program from 2023 to 2025. Previously, she taught at the Young Musician's Project and has been invited as a guest lecturer at San Jose State University.

Nancy began studying piano at the age of eight and has served as a church pianist since the age of twelve. She also serves as a church choir conductor, reflecting her lifelong involvement in music performance and community music-making.

Nancy holds an Associate of Arts in Music from West Valley College, a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from UCLA, and a Master of Music in Music Education from San Jose State University.
