Teaching Philosophy

Philosophy

I believe every student can learn, grow, and find joy in music. Each student brings unique strengths, interests, goals, and learning styles to lessons. My goal is to create a supportive and engaging learning environment where students develop strong musicianship, confidence, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for music.

My teaching is informed by Universal Design for Learning (UDL), an educational framework that emphasizes flexibility and accessibility for diverse learners. By adapting instruction to individual needs, I strive to help every student succeed.

Teaching Style

I employ a student-centered teaching approach, adapting my methods to each student's learning style, age, experience level, and goals. Some students learn best through listening, others through visual demonstrations, written instructions, hands-on activities, or a combination of these approaches.

I teach a diverse range of learners, including students with diverse learning needs, gifted students, and those pursuing music for personal enjoyment or artistic growth. Lessons are tailored to support each student's individual strengths while encouraging steady growth and achievement.

Lesson Structure

Building Strong Musical Foundations

Lesson content is customized to each student's needs and goals. Students preparing for MTAC Certificate of Merit® evaluations receive comprehensive instruction in all five areas of testing: technique, performance, sight-reading, theory, and ear training.

Each lesson includes individualized feedback, written practice assignments, and detailed lesson notes to help students review concepts and practice effectively between lessons.

For younger students, lessons focus on developing healthy technique, music reading skills, theory fundamentals, coordination, and musical expression. As students advance, instruction becomes increasingly individualized to support artistic development, performance opportunities, examinations, and personal musical interests.

Motivation and Goal Setting

One of my goals as a teacher is to help students stay motivated, engaged, and excited about learning music. I encourage motivation by offering appropriate repertoire choices, setting meaningful short-term and long-term goals, fostering self-reflection, and providing positive, constructive feedback.

The studio offers two recitals each year, providing students with opportunities to share their music and celebrate their achievements. Many students also participate in MTAC Certificate of Merit® evaluations, while others pursue additional performance opportunities, competitions, and examinations. These experiences help students build confidence, discipline, and a lasting love of music.
